On this breast-honoring October episode of Vagina Chronicles Podcast, we visit director and activist Lina Esco’s Free the Nipple campaign.
After digging deeper into the Free the Nipple movement that followed Esco’s feature-length film of the same name, we realized that there is a little bit of confusion about the point being made by the campaign’s title. What we realized was perhaps missing for women who do not feel the need or desire to bare her nipples in public was the act of solidarity for equality and the freedom of choice.
Female bodies have been deemed objects for societal judgment and use for far too long. You have to start somewhere when reprogramming how the masses at large and, more importantly, how women perceive female-presenting bodies…their own included. Lina Esco and the women who inspired her film are the pioneers necessary for the shifting focus.
America is not going to turn into a land of bare-chested people running amuck because women are free to breastfeed in public without stigma (or penalty) or if a woman decides to go topless at a beach.

How do you feel about the fact that women’s nipples are judged, let’s say “differently,” than men’s nipples? Is it fair that women’s nipples are considered sexual, but men’s nipples are not? Share your thoughts in the Comments below.
